Assisting Communities To Identify Vocational Areas of Training and Employment (ACTIVATE)

About ACTIVATE

Course aims and objectives

The aim of the Assisting Communities to Identify Vocational Areas of Training and Employment (ACTIVATE) course is to: "Equip clients with the skills they need for them to explore their own future opportunities and to support them in their choices."

The objectives are:

  • to enable clients to identify key areas of development which will include building confidence and self esteem
  • to enable clients to devise key steps to achieve desired goals
  • to enable clients to identify key skills in improving job search and attend a practical work taster placement

What will the course entail?

  • The duration of the course is for seven weeks, for 15 hours a week (this will not effect any benefit entitlements you have)
  • The course will usually run from Monday to Wednesday, 09:00 to 14:30. However, this will be subject to change where bank holidays occur during the seven weeks, and will be agreed with you in advance
  • The first four weeks will be delivered from West Lodge at Selly Oak Hospital and will focus on practical job preparation techniques and completion of unit four of the OCR Certificate in Career Planning at level two. You will also receive information from a variety of visiting speakers and be provided with health awareness guidance
  • The fifth, sixth and seventh weeks of the programme will include individual work-based tasters and these will be arranged with you on an individual basis

What makes this course different?

We acknowledge that there are many "job preparation" courses available. Our course is different because not only do we focus on identifying suitable careers and assisting you in applying for appropriate vacancies, but we also look at improvements you can adopt to your life style in general.

What happens at the end of the course?

Once the seven-week provision is completed, the tutor will support you with the transition to employment.
