About our research

In general, clinical trials are used to test the safety and effectiveness of drugs and medical procedures in a human population. This ongoing collaboration between consultants and study volunteers is one of the foundations of modern healthcare, because clinical trials help set the standards for patient care.

There are potential benefits, too, for clinical trial volunteers. For instance, volunteers with existing diseases or conditions can play a more active role in their own healthcare, gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available and help others by contributing to medical research.

Translational research describes the process of moving knowledge obtained from clinical research into a wider community or practice setting or, simply put, from the lab bench to the bedside.

The three hospitals that currently make up the Trust – Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the old Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak – have excellent links that allow research to flourish. The continued transfer of services to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, means the Trust will be even better placed to fulfil its potential as a centre that achieves world-class medical research.
