Clinical ward pharmacy services
Each clinical specialty at UHB has its own clinical pharmacist. Involvement at ward level aims to promote safe, effective and economical use of drugs. Pharmacy ward services include prescription monitoring, adverse events reporting and the provision of specialist counselling on drug therapy.
The majority of wards at UHB and Birmingham Women's Hospital offer basic ward-based clinical pharmacy services. Some wards offer extended clinical pharmacy services such as:
- ward based pharmacy technicians
- taking accurate medication histories
- providing prescribing advice
- discharge planning/patient education
- doctor/nurse education
- participation in ward rounds and ward team meetings
- improving compliance with prescribing policies and hospital formulary
- optimising re-use of patients own drugs
- supplying medication to wards
