Therapy and rehabilitation
Hearing therapy
HARC has a team of hearing therapists with specialised skills. The role of the hearing therapists is to provide a comprehensive rehabilitation service to adults with acquired hearing difficulties, tinnitus or balance problems. A variety of methods may be used to help improve a patient’s ability to manage their individual problems, enabling them to participate fully in their daily lives.
These include:
- counselling for tinnitus, balance problems and hearing loss
- communication training
- introduction to lip-reading
- listening practice following hearing aid fitting and/or cochlear implantation
- balance rehabilitation
- tinnitus management
- advice on environmental equipment
- deaf awareness training
Patients may be referred by their GP, audiologist or ear, nose and throat (ENT) consultant.
Specialist rehabilitation service
HARC has a multi-disciplinary team who can help patients with complex needs. Referrals come primarily from the West Midlands region, but we also accept referrals from outside the area.
We aim to help people with complex problems related to their hearing loss, including those with severe hearing losses. This includes psychological or social difficulties arising from communication problems at home or at work. We have skills in helping people with multiple disabilities, including those with multi-sensory impairment and those with learning difficulties.
Rehabilitation programmes may include one-to-one and group sessions. Participation by family members is encouraged.
Clinical psychology
A clinical psychologist is available as part of the multi-disciplinary team at HARC. Those who are struggling to come to terms with hearing loss, tinnitus or balance problems may find it helpful to meet the clinical psychologist.
Following an assessment of the impact on your usual activities, the psychologist can work with you to find ways of adapting to your new circumstances. This may include help in finding new strategies for managing symptoms, or in coping with changes in your life.
