Heart failure quality indicators

What is heart failure?

The heart is a pump, heart failure occurs when damage to the heart leads to an impairment in its pumping action. When this happens, less blood is pumped around the body. This leads to breathlessness, fatigue and a reduction in the amount of exercise a person can do.

Heart failure is a serious condition and is the consequence of many heart conditions, from those that affect the heart muscle to those that affect the valves and the conducting tissue.

To diagnose heart failure, the symptoms and abnormalities detected by the physician are put together with the findings from tests that measure the function of the heart, such as echocardiography (ultrasound), cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and cardiac catheterisation.

A range of quality indicators are being developed by the Heart Failure team for acute heart failure. Indicator performance for different time periods can be viewed by clicking on the links below.
