Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)

IGRT uses a variety of imaging techniques to produce 2D or 3D images to localise a patient’s anatomy, identifying the tumour size, shape and position.

These images are matched to the planning images before treatment commences to target the treatment beam more precisely and reduce the dose to the surrounding healthy tissue.

Before treatment can commence, patients have to attend the department for a number of pre-treatment planning appointments which include treatment planning imaging and/or mould room. The department has an imaging suite with two dedicated oncology CT scanners.

Once the planning process is complete, the resulting individual treatment plan is checked and authorised by the consultant oncologist.

Treatment parameters are transferred to a specific system designed for radiotherapy and double-checked ready for treatment to begin.

The department has a large range of machines with different energies and modalities.  Treatment is delivered by the most appropriate treatment machine.
