Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)

IMRT is an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy which uses computer-controlled linear accelerators to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumour, or to specific areas within the tumour.

During IMRT the radiation dose is matched to the three-dimensional shape of a patient’s lesion, focusing higher radiation doses on the tumour while minimising exposure to healthy tissue surrounding the treatment area.

IMRT utilises multiple radiation beams from more than one direction that constantly adjust to achieve the three-dimensional shape of the tumour.

The Radiotherapy department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) has gained quality assurance certification to ISO 9001:2008 and meets all the standards set within the National Cancer Peer Review Programme relating to IMRT.
