Key achievements

• £12.8m secured over five years to fund the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility, the largest grant of its type in the country
• Creation of the Birmingham Health Partnership with the University of Birmingham to promote and provide facilities for clinical research
• £15m secured over five years for the new NIHR Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre, a national centre for trauma research which takes discoveries from the military frontline to improve outcomes for all patients
• £6m secured for National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Institute of Biomedical Research to develop new therapies for liver disease
• £10m over five years to establish the NIHR Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) for Birmingham and the Black Country
• The first Cancer Research UK Centre established in Birmingham, with £9m annual backing to support development and collaborative research
