The Learning and Development department at University Hospitals Birmingham

Learning and Development Department

The Learning and Development Department aims to deliver training and education provisions for support staff within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

In 1998 the department became an accredited City and Guilds Centre, initially offering NVQs in care. Since then we have expanded our portfolio and are now able to offer NVQs in the following vocational areas:

  • Health and Social Care, Level 2 and 3
  • Business Administration, Level 2 and 3
  • Customer Service, Level 2
  • Support Services, Level 2
  • Assessor's award, Level 3
  • Verifier's award, Level 4

In partnership with Matthew Boulton College, the department delivers NVQs under the "Train to Gain" funding provision. Within this provision we work in partnership with the college in delivery of "Skills for Life" awards (literacy and numeracy).

For staff currently not undertaking an NVQ or for students undertaking training at UHB we are also able to offer "Skills for Life" provisions through our Learn Direct facility. The Learn Direct programmes are delivered by Pertemps People Development Group (PPDG) tutors on site at UHB. Learn Direct allows individuals the flexibility to study at work or at home, but with the benefit of having tutorial support when required.

The department is also responsible for the delivery of the "Auxiliary Training Programme", which is a three-day induction for newly appointed HCAs within the Trust. This programme is delivered on a monthly basis and referrals are made primarily through Nurse Recruitment.
