Medical physics research
The Medical Physics department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) manages the radiotherapy equipment, which includes some of the most complex machines used in any hospital environment. This includes particle accelerators, which are used to create intense beams of energy for targeting unwanted cells, such as cancerous tumours.
The Medical Physics team works closely with clinical colleagues in Radiography and Radiotherapy. Radiographers use beams of energy to create images of the body’s internal structures, while radiotherapists use the energy in a different way to attack the tumours.
Under the leadership of Professor Stuart Green, Director of Medical Physics, the department is developing new systems of scanning and treatment, as well as novel ways of using existing technology.
