Brian New

11 hour 11 minute Remembrance Day ride

Story posted/last updated: 11 November 2011

A father of two from Warrington is gearing up for a Remembrance Day cycling challenge to help injured soldiers at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Brian New, a triathlon coach at the David Lloyd Gym in Great Sankey, is embarking on an 11 hour 11 minute sponsored cycle ride on Friday 11 November 2011 to raise funds for the hospital’s official charity.

The money Brian, 48, raises will go to the charity’s Home for the Brave appeal to develop a dedicated space away from clinical areas, but close to the hospital, for military patients to relax in with their families, friends and colleagues.

Brian, who lives in Penketh with his wife Alison, son Ben, 19 and daughter Bella, 17 said: “We regularly see stories in the papers or on the TV about members of our Armed Forces being killed but we don’t often hear about the number of servicemen and women who have been injured. They return to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham to receive life-saving treatment and could be away from their homes, their friends and family for months while recovering.

“I am passionate about supporting the QEHB Charity’s Home for the Brave appeal because our troops deserve this care. Having seen the heartbreak caused when a soldier is killed or injured, as sadly some of Ben’s friends have been, I’m keen to do something to help. Having lost my brother I understand what it’s like to lose someone you love. If everyone makes a small donation in sponsorship we can make a big difference in helping our Forces.”

Brian will be joined on his challenge by his family, colleagues and three members of the Armed Forces who will be pedalling in full military dress.

Following his Remembrance Ride Brian will be taking on a number of other fundraising challenges including a 4.8-mile swim, 224-mile bike ride and 52-mile run in a Double Enduroman event in Lanzarote in February.

If you'd like to sponsor Brian please visit his Virgin Money Giving page. To find out more about the appeal and how you can help military patients, please visit the QE Home for the Brave appeal website or contact the team on 0121 371 4852.
