Story posted/last updated: 20 July 2010

Our series of free health talks, held at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, continues this week with a presentation on cancer treatments.

This talk takes place on 23 July, in the Postgraduate Medical Centre, and is open to everyone – there's no need to book. The session starts and 09:30 and will run until 12:00.

UHB is a specialist national cancer treatment and research centre, and in 2009 became the first ever Cancer Research UK Centre.

The Trust works closely with the University of Birmingham, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital to develop both develop and deliver world-class treatment.

The Trust is also bidding to build the country’s first proton beam therapy centre, which would specialise in the treatment of children’s cancer and complex adult cancers of the brain stem, eyes and spine.

The Trust runs the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, as well as the existing Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals.

UHB is Europe’s largest centre for solid organ transplants, treats all of Britain’s most seriously wounded military personnel and is a leading centre for treating and researching cancer, trauma and burns. Its clinical staff are among the best in the world across a huge range of specialties.

These talks are aimed at raising public awareness of important health issues, and give the public the chance to see how these world-class experts work and to learn from their expertise.

Other topics in the programme include talks on military patients, the new hospital, kidney function and disease, healthy eating, and coronary disease.
