Patient support groups celebrated at QEHB

Story posted/last updated: 15 March 2011

An event to showcase the work of Birmingham’s patient support groups was held at the city’s biggest hospital.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) in Edgbaston hosted the Working Together event in association with The Birmingham Local Involvement Network (LINk) to raise awareness of patient support groups.

Working Together is designed to empower patients and give them the tools to get the support they need.

The event also promoted the University Hospitals Birmingham Action Group (UHBAG), formed by volunteers who want to make a difference in the way health services are commissioned and provided by the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the QEHB.

Members of the group have been involved in various activities connected to the new hospital, from taking part in meetings and having a say on projects to having an input into the contract for patient transport services.

LINk Community Outreach Officer George Kingsley added, “The event has helped LINk to engage with patients, staff and visitors to give them a better understanding of the type of help they can receive from support groups. It provided a fantastic opportunity for groups to promote their work.”

Birmingham LINk has a number of action groups, of which UHBAG is part. Anyone is welcome to join a group and the level of involvement depends entirely on how much time individuals are willing to support the LINk on a voluntary basis.

Information about the University Hospitals Birmingham Action Group, and other Birmingham LINk groups, can be found on the Birmingham LINk website.
