Three peaks for patients
Story posted/last updated: 16 September 2010
Staff from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s neurophysiology department are gearing up to climb the UK’s three highest peaks in 24 hours, in aid of military and young cancer patients.
The ‘Braintrekkers’ will be scaling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon on the 2 and 3 October, ascending and descending over 10,000 feet in 24 hours. The team of seven is hoping to raise £5,000 for the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and Young Persons’ Unit funds within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) Charity.
Leading the team of clinical scientists and doctors, who specialise in brain and nerve tests, is consultant neurophysiologist Sajjad Ali.
The 37 year old from Hodgehill said: “We’re confident we can complete the challenge but it’s going to be hard because we have such a short timeframe to do it in and we’ll be walking over rough terrain through the night. We’ve spent months training, meeting up every weekend to hike on the Malverns and Clent Hills and further afield.
“We’ve experienced the best and the worst of the British weather too, scaling Snowdon and Scafell Pike in torrential rain, which we all found tough. Whenever we’ve become tired or despondent, however, we remind ourselves of what the people we are raising money for are going through. There are young men and women being wounded in Afghanistan and young people here battling cancer. It puts everything into perspective.”
Clinical physiologist Satinder Bhath, who is 45 and lives in Handsworth, initiated the idea and added: “We want to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. We would love to raise £5,000 so please give anything you can spare to QEHB Charity and help us make a real difference to the lives of patients here in Birmingham.”
The Braintrekkers, who are Sajjad, Satinder, Daphne Welvaert (48 from Stourbridge), Donna Reid (29 from Burton upon Trent), David Rollings (29 from Solihull), Michelle Wroblewska (23 from Quinton) and Neil Davies (29 from Quinton), will be starting the challenge at Ben Nevis on the 2nd October at 8am. To raise funds they have organised a host of events from bag packing at Sainsbury’s Northfield to tea mornings in the department.
