UHB launches dementia course

Story posted/last updated: 30 December 2010

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is launching a scheme to improve understanding of dementia, running introductory training for staff who are new or who have little knowledge of the condition.

The one-day course will look at what dementia means, and will explore different approaches to dementia care, including various ways to communicate with people with the illness.

The course examines the five different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, which are the most common forms.

Learners will discuss their own experiences of caring for patients with the illness, giving staff the opportunity to gain knowledge from each other, as well as from the course.

UHB Learning and Development Manager, Karen Jameson, said: “Participants are encouraged to discuss, reflect and share thoughts and opinions while on the course. They can learn from each other, resulting in better care for our patients and community."
