Our research network
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) and the old Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) are leading clinical research institutions in the country. They are adjacent to the Medical School of the University of Birmingham (UoB) and is a regional and national centre for specialist clinical services.
Selly Oak Hospital is part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and was a regional centre for burns, plastics and trauma. These services moved to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) in June 2010.
In December 2011, the Trust and UoB joined forces to create the Birmingham Health Partnership, which aims to promote clinical research by supporting researchers in submitting bids for large-scale clinical studies. BHP also promotes translational research, forming a link between clinicians in the hospitals and academics in the university, while assisting applicants in producing high-quality grant protocols.
The Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (WTCRF), based at the QEH, works with both the Trust and UoB, providing dedicated facilities for investigators undertaking high-quality research.
The NIHR (National Institute of Health Research) Birmingham Biomedical Research Unit is a collaboration between clinicians and researchers from the Trust and UoB. The service focuses on getting basic medical research out of the laboratory and into the hospital clinic to deliver new treatments for patients with liver disease.
The National Institute for Health Research Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (NIHR SRMRC) is a national centre for trauma research, taking discoveries from the military frontline to improve outcomes for all patients. It brings together pioneering advances in surgery and infection by military and civilian scientists and clinicians to deliver excellence in innovation in a complex area of acute care. Launched in January 2011, the centre will share with the wider NHS the knowledge gained from treating seriously injured military and civilian patients.
The Centre for Clinical Haematology (CCH), based at the QEH, is a clinical research facility whose mission is to develop and deliver novel drug and transplant therapies in patients with haematological malignancies.
The QEHB campus is also home to the first Cancer Research UK Centre which will eventually link up with others in the chain around the country. As the first designated centre, Birmingham will set the pace for national and international progress for genetics, gene therapy and the link between viruses and some cancers. In addition, it will focus on cancers of the prostate and bladder, and leukaemia. It will also become a leading centre for clinical trials.
UHB is the lead NHS organisation for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) for Birmingham and the Black Country. Working with its academic partner UoB, the Trust leads surrounding NHS organisations in undertaking high-quality applied health research focused on the needs of patients, the results of which can be put into practice in the NHS.
The Birmingham and the Black Country Comprehensive Local Research Network (BBC CLRN) is one of twenty-five CLRNs across England which form part of the NIHR Comprehensive Clinical Research Network (CCRN). CCRN provides support for clinical trials and other well designed studies in all areas of disease and clinical need.
The BBC CLRN is hosted by University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) and works with local Trusts and Higher Education Institutes within the area to support, facilitate and provide funding so that high-quality research can be carried out.
