Pain management clinics

There are a variety of clinics held each week by the three consultants working in the service. Each consultant holds a weekly multi-disciplinary clinic for new patients, where patients are assessed by the consultant, clinical psychologist and physiotherapist. There are also doctor-only clinics run specifically for nerve pain, and pelvic or abdominal pain.
There are also doctor-only clinics to deal with specific problems, such as pain from nerve damage, and pelvic pain. There are also clinics which are run by the nurses to follow up patients following medication changes, providing education, advice and support.

A group Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) clinic provides education for clients explaining the use and administration of the machine. Clients are then followed up in a TENS review clinic individually to assess the response and advise on further use of the TENS. There are also clinics with the clinical psychologists.

As well as seeing people in the multidisciplinary clinic, the clinical psychologists also see clients individually, in order to help them manage the impact that chronic pain can have on their lives. The clinical psychologists, along with nurses and a physiotherapist run the Living with Pain group programme, and are developing a further pain management programme. These programmes run on one afternoon a week for a period of eight weeks, and are held at Cocksmoor Woods Leisure Centre.

Day case procedures are performed at Selly Oak Hospital in the theatre and X-ray departments, with clients staying at the Day Surgery Unit.
