Questions and answers

What is a patient and carer council?

There are two councils, one for each hospital. The Councils provide support to each of the 5 clinical divisions which are made up of a number of wards and departments in grouped clinical specialties. The councils are made up from staff representatives and patients and carers who have used the services.

Members of the Councils are patients, carers, Governors and staff representatives. The Councils are chaired by patients supported by the Associate Director of Nursing.

What do the councils do?

The councils work with clinical staff and managers to improve the patient experience. Senior staff and managers on the councils then take the responsibility to ensure that actions are achieved.

The councils are involved at the planning stage of developments or changes in service delivery in the hospitals.

How often do the councils meet?

What would I be expected to do if I joined a council?

You would be asked to attend the relevant council meeting as often as you can and join in the discussions. The meetings are relaxed and friendly, and everyone is given an opportunity to contribute to the discussions and to raise any issues they want. You may also get involved in various developments eg. nutrition.

What do I do if I would like to join a council or to find out more?

You are welcome to attend one of the meetings to find out what happens and speak to council members before you make a decision to join a council. More information is available in the patient carer council leaflet, featured in the download box below.

If you would like to join or just find out more, please email Carol Rawlings, Associate Director of Patient Affairs, or her PA, Lorraine Bateman.
