Pharmacy student training

Student technician training

The Pharmacy department provide competence based training for student technicians based at UHB. There is a dedicated team of NVQ assessors and internal verifiers who provide support and guidance to all NVQ students.

Students attend Matthew Boulton College of Further and Higher Education on a day release basis to study for a BTEC in pharmaceutical sciences which runs along side the NVQ 3 in pharmacy services. On completion of the college course, students receive a dual award and an NVQ portfolio.

The practical aspect of the NVQ programme is organised to include a full rotation through each area of Pharmacy enabling students to gather evidence of their competence. In 2011 the rotation period was extended to include working with the ward based clinical pharmacy team and shadowing the gene therapy technician.

Student pharmacy technicians also receive regular reviews to monitor their progress throughout their two years of training at UHB.

Student summer placements

Pharmacy students can work at UHB for two to four weeks during their summer vacation. The placement involves a planned programme of work and shadowing pharmacists with learning outcomes to get a wide experience of the roles of hospital pharmacists.
