Research facts
- In April 2010 there was 120 trials "open" within the Trust. These are trials that are active and recruiting patients
- Some 45 trials were opened within the recorded six-month period (April – September 2009)
- The average time from proposal to opening new trials is eight – ten weeks (as opposed to six months, previously)
- In April 2010, 320 patients were placed in clinical trials (versus circa 180 in 2008)
- As of May 2009, there were 78 cancer trials "open" at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB)
- More than 1,600 patients have been recruited to cancer trials since 2002
- Currently, about 4.5% of all oncology patients take part in trials. The aim is to increase this to 7.5% in the next twelve months
- UHB is home to the Wellcome Trust's largest funded biomedical facility
- The co-located UHB/University of Birmingham (UoB) campus sits at the gateway of the A38 Technology Corridor
- Birmingham is one of the UK's six Science Cities
- UHB has the largest clinical haematology diagnostic unit in Europe
- Currently, the UHB/UoB campus has the highest concentration of clinical trials in Europe
- More clinical researchers are trained in Birmingham than anywhere else in the UK
- Two of the largest ever trials into the treatment of Parkinson's disease, focusing on surgery and medication, are currently being carried out
