Support for users of radioactive materials
Specialist radiation protection advice can be provided to users of radioactive materials in the medical and industrial sectors. An annual survey of general protection measures and facilities, with inspection of records, is supplemented by providing advice in relation to all regulations concerning the use of ionising radiations.
Further information about the following regulations is available on the radiation protection advice page.
Other services may be available, such as:
- hazard assessment for specialised sources
- risk assessment of premises
- assessment of patient doses
- decommissioning of laboratories using radioactive materials and advice on the transfer and disposal of contaminated articles
- advice on the design of new radiation installations
- advice on the purchase of new equipment
- leakage tests of sealed sources
- calibration of contamination monitors
- calibration of radionuclide dose calibrators
- performance testing of gamma cameras
RRPPS can perform surveys of nuclear medicine equipment, at commissioning and for routine performance checks.
Calibration of radionuclide dose calibrators
Calibration tests can be carried out on-site using specialised calibration sources. These follow guidelines issued in IPSM Report No.65, "Quality Standards in Nuclear Medicine".
Performance testing of gamma cameras
Test methods for planar and tomographic imaging follow guidelines issued in IPSM Report No.66, "Quality Control of Gamma Cameras" and tests from MDA Evaluation Report MDA/96/50 "Gamma Camera Performance: Technical Assessment Protocol". The client should make available a large area sealed (flood) source, some Tc-99m liquid sources by arrangement and the test phantoms as recommended by the manufacturer of the gamma camera.
