Volunteers Brian and Dorothy Webb

Volunteer case study: Brian and Dorothy Webb

For Brian and Dorothy Webb, volunteering is about being able to make a difference to patients and visitors.

Both began volunteering after seeing adverts in the Outpatients Department at Selly Oak Hospital while having a coffee. Brian and Dorothy now meet and greet patients and visitors in Area 4 of the department.

One of their duties is helping patients with the new self check-in machines located in the department.

“We really enjoy meeting and helping people, especially elderly people or those who are not computer literate and need our help with the self check-in machines.”

Dorothy, who has been volunteering for over 10 years, has fond memories of the time when military patients were treated at Selly Oak Hospital. She joked: “I remember one young man who wanted to go to Frankie and Benny's for his dinner. Unfortunately the battery on his wheelchair had run out, so it was the canteen at Selly Oak instead.”

With a combined total of 15 years volunteering experience between them, Brian and Dorothy continue to make a valued contribution.
