Volunteer case study: Kenneth Moore
Kenneth Moore signed up as a volunteer at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) after his wife sadly passed away.
“The hospital has been good to my family over the past 14 years,” he said. “They cared for my wife and they looked after me when I needed operations and treatment. I didn’t have any money to give the hospital, so I decided to give my time instead.”
Volunteering as a welcomer three days a week at the main entrance to QEHB, Kenneth is often the first point of contact for patients and visitors entering the hospital.
“When people come to hospital they are often confused or apprehensive, so being greeted by a friendly face often puts them at ease.”
Working closely with the front-of-house staff, Kenneth helps point patients and visitors in the right direction, as well as providing wheelchairs for those less mobile.
“I get great satisfaction from helping other people. When patients turn to me and say, ‘Thank you for your help,’ it makes it all worthwhile.”
The former TV engineer was also lucky enough to welcome Prince Charles and Prime Minister David Cameron when they visited the hospital in December 2010.
