Volunteer case study: Sarb Madahar

Working as a full-time IT manager for Capita has not deterred Sarb Mahinder from giving up part of his weekends to volunteer.

Sarb wanted to give something back to the community and has been volunteering for over a year, welcoming patients and visitors on Friday and Saturday evenings to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB).

Volunteering has given Sarb the opportunity to meet new people and build positive relationships with both staff and patients at the hospital: “I really enjoy helping people and in the process I have been able to meet people from all backgrounds and get to know them more.”

Volunteering at QEHB has also provided its challenges.

“The new hospital is a big place and it took me time to find my way around, let alone point people in the right direction. I would often walk to the ward or department with the visitor just to help find my own way around.”
