Apprenticeship case study: Callum Curran

Callum Curran completed a Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship (Level 2) with University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). Here, he and Sarah Flynn, who managed Callum during his apprenticeship, discuss his experience.

It was challenging but it taught me a lot about the world of work.

Callum said of his apprenticeship: "This apprenticeship was my first experience of work. It was challenging but it taught me a lot about the world of work and how to act in a professional manner.

"Being customer-facing tested my confidence but my supervisor and tutors helped me overcome my nerves and taught me a lot about body language and tone of voice. This feedback and training paid off. I've been given a full-time position as an administrative assistant and receptionist in one of the Trust's Therapy Services departments.

I'd definitely recommend the apprenticeship to a friend. The tutors are really supportive and are willing to help anyone. I think it's a particularly good route for people who are new to full-time work and are interested in the way the NHS works.

"The main piece of advice I would offer to anyone taking on an apprenticeship at UHB is to stay on top of your work and make sure you manage your time effectively. The end point assessments will be just around the corner before you know it."

Sarah, who's the Office Manager for Therapy Services, managed Callum while he was on his apprenticeship. She was able to help Callum secure a permanent position with the team when his apprenticeship ended.

Sarah said: "I've managed a few apprentices here at UHB and I've found the experience really rewarding.

"I enjoy playing a part in career development and it's great for the Trust as it allows us to train and grow people who will hopefully go on to become permanent members of the team.

"It's been lovely watching Callum and other apprentices' confidence blossom during their time with us.
