Meet the Clinical Photography Team
The Medical Illustration Department at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has five clinical photographers based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
We employ qualified, highly experienced, professional staff working to meet the highest standards.
Jane Tovey, Medical Illustration Manager
Jane has Worked in the NHS for 34 years and managed the services at UHB NHS Foundation Trust since 1991. During this time, Jane has managed several mergers, rationalisations and developments and introduced numerous income generation schemes and cost recovery programmes befitting the needs of the service at its time.
Over the last 25 years the service has developed from a one person pure photography unit into the comprehensive Medical Illustration service it is today.
Nationally, she is the Chairman of the Institute of Medical Illustrators (2019 – 2022) and she has audited many NHS Medical Illustration departments over a 15 year period undertaking service level reviews. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Medical Illustrators and was awarded the N.K.Harrison Medal for services to the profession and in acknowledgment of past work with the Department of Health.
Rob Macmillan, Clinical Photography ManagerRob has been employed as a Clinical/Ophthalmic photographer for almost two decades, having previously worked elsewhere in England, Scotland, Australia and as far afield as Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, where he worked as an Opthalmic photographer for a team researching the gene responsible for glaucoma.

Laura Jackman, Clinical Photographer
Laura graduated from BCU in 2007 with a first class honours degree in photography, going on to complete a Masters degree in Media Enterprise.
After working as a self-employed photographer, she began her career in Clinical Photography at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust where she completed a PGCert.
Since moving to UHB in 2015, Laura specialises in photographing orthopaedic surgery for a web based teaching program for surgeons.
Beth Flowers, Clinical Photographer
Beth started her career at the QEHB after graduating from the University of Nottingham with an MSc in Biological Photography and Imaging, following a BSc Hons in Biology. She also holds a PgCert in Clinical Photography at Distinction level and is the Careers Lead for the Institute of Medical Illustrators.
Her favourite aspect of the job is meeting patients from all over the hospital and being able to positively contribute to their journey. Beth has trained in ophthalmology, thermography, 3D imaging, dermoscopy and dental photography as well as photographing Trust research trials.
Erin Lynskey, Clinical Photographer
Erin graduated from the University of Plymouth in 2012 with a BA Hons in Media Arts. After graduating, she spent time working as a self-employed photographer travelling and working in portraiture photography before specialising as a Clinical Photographer in 2015.
In 2018, Erin completed the Clinical Photography Post Graduate course through Staffordshire University and has been employed with UHB since 2019, having previously worked as a Clinical Photographer at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.
Damian Hayes, Clinical Photographer
Damian studied Art and Design at the Birmingham City University, going on to graduate from the University of Derby with a first class honours degree in commercial photography.
Damian started working for University Hospitals Birmingham in 2018, where he completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Photography.
