Nurse education

Working at UHB

As a new nurse or member of theatres staff you are guaranteed an unrivalled induction programme at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), one of Europe’s leading hospitals. Part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), QEHB is the UK’s newest and largest single-site hospital, boasting award-winning facilities that will provide you with the opportunity to train using some of the most modern equipment in the NHS.

Our clinical education team is here to support you and help to develop your role, skills and knowledge, enabling you to access a wide range of career opportunities within the Trust.

New nursing and theatre staff take part in a comprehensive tailor-made induction programme which we call our Healthcare Practitioner Programme (HPIP). HPIP is a week-long course providing teaching and learning sessions, from resuscitation and blood transfusion training, through to medical device, cannulation and phlebotomy assessments. The course also includes training on our bespoke prescribing system.

Student nurses

UHB works closely with the University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University, both major providers of nurse education.

As a student nurse at UHB, you will learn and develop your skills in a nurturing and caring environment. Our extensive range of specialist care, including liver, renal and neuroscience departments, and our various medical and surgical specialties, allow you to gain experience in some of the UK’s most renowned clinical services. QEHB is a Major Trauma Centre and has the largest intensive care unit in Europe, which will be on offer to you for excellent clinical experience.

You will meet our dedicated Practice Placement Team, which is there to guide you through your time at the Trust. Together with our wider education team, they will support your placement with a range of clinical and education opportunities designed to enable you to gain the required competencies, knowledge and experience to support your career development.
