Respiratory support team

The respiratory support team are speciailst respiratory nurses and physiotherapists who provide advice and education for patients, carers and staff at UHB and South Birmingham PCT.

The respiratory support team (RST) also offer the early supported discharge (ESD) service. The service offers patients with a non-complex admission of an exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to be discharged home early. This includes support from a specailist respiratory multi-professional team of nurses and physiotherapists with clincial responsibility under the lead of Consultant Dr Gompertz.

Before patients can be discharged home the team will complete a full and extensive assessment to ensure it is safe to manage the patient at home. The patient will remain under hospital care until a pre-determined criteria for discharge is met.

Patients will be visited at home to assess their progress and discharge them once they meet predetermined criteria. All patients will then be reviewed in a follow up clinic six weeks after discharge from the service.

The respiratory discharge service also provide early discharge for selected patients with uncomplicated community acquired pneumonias of moderate severity.
