Medical same day emergency care (MSDEC) referrals to Gynaecology and Genitourinary Medicine (GUM)

This page is intended for use by clinicians at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham as a guideline for referring patients to Gynaecology and GUM.

How to refer

If a patient needs further support from Gynaecology, please refer via the following methods:

Monday to Sunday (all hours)

  • Refer patients via the acute gynaecology clinic referral form on the intranet (you will need to be on a Trust networked device to access intranet pages)
  • Referrals will be appropriately triaged and an appointment will be made for the patient
  • Advise the patient to seek further support from their GP while waiting for an appointment

Gynaecology emergency

If you suspect a gynaecological emergency or need to speak directly with a gynaecologist, please contact the gynaecologist registrar on call at Birmingham Woman’s Hospital (Monday to Sunday, at all hours) via Switchboard and ask to be put through to gynaecologist registrar on call.

What not to refer

Suspected malignancy

For a suspected malignancy, please refer via the urgent suspected cancer referral pathway.

Suspected sexually transmitted infections and sexual health issues

For suspected sexually transmitted infections (unless the patient is medically unstable) and other sexual health related issues, please refer the patient to Umbrella for sexual health services located in Birmingham and Solihull.

For post exposure prophylaxis after sexual exposure to HIV (PEPSE), the Emergency Department can initiate PEPSE and refer to appropriate sexual health clinic.
