Training and development
Welcoming staff to University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB)
We understand how vital it is for all new staff joining the Trust to have access to the best possible introduction to the organisation. Our Corporate Trust Induction marks the start of a new staff member’s learning and development journey at UHB. This one-day programme welcomes staff and introduces them to the values which underpin our vision of delivering the best in care. Our programme will cover many mandatory training topics, such as fire safety, information governance and infection control, which all contribute to our patient and employee safety and security.
Leadership and management development
UHB is committed to producing high-quality leaders at all levels. We have in place a leadership pathway so our current and aspiring leaders can clearly see how they can enhance, learn and develop new skills when leading a team to provide excellent patient care.
We have a wide range of leadership development opportunities for all our staff, which include programmes delivered by experienced in-house educators, as well as schemes delivered in partnership with external experts.
A variety of interactive learning programmes are available, varying in duration. These all explore a variety of different topics, including programmes such as “first time leadership” though to “Executive Master Classes” for our more senior leaders.
If you would like to find out more about leadership opportunities at the Trust please email the Learning and Development team.
Training and development courses
Ensuring all staff have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge to both enable them to fulfil their role effectively and support their career ambitions is a key aim of the Trust workforce development strategy. We provide a wide range of learning opportunities for both clinical and non-clinical staff, which can be accessed as taught programmes or through our excellent range of e-learning activities. Our employees’ learning and development needs will be assessed and agreed through our Trust job appraisal process. Staff will be supported in finding the most appropriate learning method to suit their individual needs. Our expert coaching and mentorship scheme supports many staff, and we will help people to gain access to the right type of personal development to meet their needs.
UHB embraces the “Just-in-Time” philosophy of education and to achieve this we provide training and information at the point our staff require it.
The Trust offers a variety of e-learning programmes to assist staff in completing their mandatory training requirements or develop their awareness on a variety of different health-related topics. These include awareness packages on:
- advanced life support
- digital dictation
- display screen equipment
- managing risks
- pressure ulcer grading
- venous thromboembolism
