Get a jab

Where to get a jab

Flu vaccinations will be available in most wards and departments.

There will also be a range of pop-up clinics, roving vaccinators and ‘call a jabs’ available. Please check back to this page as it will be continually updated.

Ask your ward manager, sister or charge nurse

Ward managers, sisters, charge nurses, many clinical educators, occupational health nurses and other nursing leads are being trained to provide the flu jab in all wards and departments.

Simply ask the ward manager for your flu jab and they will be able to provide it – over 100 vaccinators have now been trained across UHB.

All staff are eligible for vaccination, whether you are clinical or non-clinical, nursing, AHP, scientist, facilities, catering, student or admin and clerical – if you work, learn or volunteer at UHB, you can have a vaccination.

  • At its mildest, flu is unpleasant. However, for vulnerable patients it can be life-threatening, causing pneumonia and even sepsis.
  • In 2018/19, more than 1,000 patients were admitted to our hospitals with the flu.
  • Symptoms include a very sudden fever, an aching body, and feeling tired and exhausted (often bed-ridden). Other symptoms can be a sore throat, cough, headache, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and/or nausea.
  • If you catch flu, stay at home, drink plenty of fluids, rest, sleep, keep warm and take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and manage aches and pains – always read the label of any medication you take.
  • The flu vaccine offers up to 90% protection against catching the flu.
  • Vaccination is the best defence we have, but influenza is an ever-changing virus, so we need to have the vaccine each year to have the best chance of staying protected.

Had your flu vaccination elsewhere?

You only need to tell us if you have your flu jab somewhere else (you don’t need to tell us about a COVID-19 booster).

If you do tell us about your flu jab, this will help us to measure and predict how protected we will be as a Trust when flu season hits us.

So if you get protected early at your GP or a pharmacist, or anywhere else outside of the Trust, please let our team know by completing the notification form.
