Members' profiles: Allen Phillips
Allen Phillips is currently studying for a BA in Fashion Retail Marketing and is a floor manager for a large high-street retailer.
He volunteers at Selly Oak Hospital in the Communications Department and is looking forward to the year ahead.
"One day I was sitting on the bus and I saw an advert for volunteers," explains 25-year-old Allen. "I had often thought about volunteering but had never been in a position to do it before. Something struck a chord with me and I went ahead and called the hospital."
"The hospital is amazing. However, they are always in need of help – people don't realize how many support services there are behind the scenes that allow the medical teams to do their job."
As a marketing student, Allen gets fully involved in the communications department by helping out on photo shoots, distributing posters and leaflets, proof reading and updating contact lists. His experience in sales also means he is confident and proficient in dealing with the high volume of calls the department receives.
Although Allen joined the Trust to help the hospital and give something back to the community, he has found that his placement has given him lots of first-hand marketing experience which will help him complete his course.
"The department has a great team feeling and I have been welcomed in as one of them. They have been very accommodating and let me choose hours that suit my studies. If others are thinking of becoming a volunteer then they should go for it! There is lots of variety in the types of roles, and the Trust is very supportive."
