Tagging and summarising services pages

The "Services" section on the UHB website is generated by a Sitekit list by page, with links generated by keywords added in page properties.

Keyword tags should be used carefully to ensure links to services are clear and easy for the user, and to avoid confusion.

Do

  • Tag only one page for each service or service sub-section, and be selective
  • Carefully consider which tags to use
  • Capitalise at least the first letter for each new key phrase/keyword tag (proper nouns should be used for many of our services)
  • Separate each key word/phrase with a comma – no need for spaces
  • Add a summary of the content of the page in page properties (Standard tab - should be done for every page on the site anyway)
  • Add a description for search engines in page properties (Metadata tab – should be done for every page on the site anyway
    • Try not to just lift text from the page – ideally this should be a unique description
    • Does not need to be the same as the summary text (see point above)
    • Ensure it’s completed – if you start populating the summary field but then click away before it’s completed it will only partially populate the description field (by default, the description field is auto-populated by the contents of the summary field)
  • Use common sense, and be flexible – one rigid approach won’t work everywhere
  • Each variant of a keyword will create a new link, so keep each instance of a specific term consistent with others
    • Use the same spelling
    • Ensure the same case is used

Don't

  • Tag every page in the services section – it’s a list of services; not a list of every topic associated with all our topics
  • Use lots of keywords, “just in case”
  • Tag any pages outside of the services section with keywords – there’s no need
  • Use multiple similar tags on the same page, as it just bloats the lists
    • For example, don’t tag a page with:
      • Cervical cancer and Cervix
      • Breast cancer and Breast screening
      • A&E and Accident and Emergency
