Entry requirements for the TNA programme

Qualifications

To join the trainee nursing associate programme at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), you will need the following.

• GCSE grade C or 4, or above, in English Language and Mathematics
• GCSE equivalents, e.g.:
  • Functional Skills level 2 in Mathematics and English Language, or
  • Key Skills level 2 Numeracy and Literacy
• One or more of the following:
  • One A Level, grade D or above
  • Two AS Levels, grade D or above
  • BTEC National Award, grade M
  • BTEC National Certificate grade PP
  • BTEC National Diploma grade PPP
  • Access to HE diploma
  • NVQ level 3 full diploma
  • NVQ level 2 plus written paper (1,500-word essay)

Portfolio

A portfolio of evidence is required if no NVQ level 2 qualification has been achieved. A portfolio route has been devised for applicants already working in a health or social care setting who do not meet the formal entry requirements. To follow this route you still require GCSE Maths and English, or equivalents.

The portfolio should include:

• two written testimonies, one of which must be from your employer, supporting your application 
• one reflective written piece that draws on your current practice (1,500 words)
