Sukhdev was born and brought up in Edgbaston. He entered medical school in 1979 in Dundee and returned to live and work in Edgbaston after graduating in 1984. He worked at Selly Oak Hospital and then specialised as a GP in Bellevue Medical Centre, Edgbaston for 32 years. As a clinical doctor, Sukhdev has also taken on significant roles in clinical management and clinical leadership at senior Board level, both as a provider and a commissioner.

He retired in 2019 after 35 years as a practising doctor. His focus since then has been on voluntary work in the community, particularly in relation to COVID-19 support and building community resilience. He is a member of the Birmingham Interfaith Forum. He is passionate about human rights and equality of all.

Recently, he has returned to work, taking on mentoring and coaching to GPs and GP Partnerships. He has a keen interest on NHS reform and is currently involved in organisational development of NHS primary care, particularly primary care networks and the evolving integrated care system that will manage most of Birmingham healthcare. With his wide experience, he plans to bridge the gap between the NHS and real patient needs, including culturally competent care.
