Heartlands Treatment Centre (HTC)

How it all began

Following planning permission from Birmingham City Council for a new, four-storey facility on the Heartlands site, the £97m investment in the new Heartlands Treatment Centre was announced by the Department for Health and Social Care in August 2019.

Following planning permission from Birmingham City Council for a new, four-storey facility on the Heartlands site, the £97m investment in the new centre was announced by the Department for Health and Social Care in August 2019. This was an exciting step forward in progress of the new centre and meant that a series of enabling works could take place in preparation for construction of the new centre.

Bordesley House and the oncology bungalow were demolished so ground works could start, then contractors, Kier Construction were appointed to work in partnership with the Trust to build the new centre.

Main construction started in early 2020, and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the HTC was completed on time and on budget and handed over in November 2022.

Since then, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) has turned the building into a fully-functioning clinical space welcoming up to 1,500 patients a day.

The doors first opened to patients on Monday 9 January 2023.
