UHB+, the staff bank

UHB+ is an in-house staffing service for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), which runs Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, Solihull Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

UHB+ fills shifts which may be vacant due to annual leave, sickness or as a temporary measure for short-term activities.

More than 1,500 people work for UHB+ on an ad hoc or regular basis.

What qualities are we looking for in our staff?

Nursing assistant

An ability to undertake basic nursing duties with experience of working in a nursing-type role within a nursing home or similar, as well as an ability to be flexible and adaptable together with a good understanding of confidentiality and professionalism.

Ideally you will have experience of working within an acute trust and/or relevant NVQs.

Registered nurse

Current NMC registration is essential, with six months' relevant experience. You will be flexible and adaptable, together with a good understanding of accountability and professional code of conduct. You should be able to demonstrate at interview a good understanding of the qualities needed to plan and deliver patient care within a multi-disciplinary team.


For most administrative roles you will need to have a minimum of GCSE Grades A – C in English and Maths and relevant experience in an office environment. We will provide paid training for relevant IT in-house systems before you start work.

For secretarial work you will also need to have typing and audio typing qualifications and relevant experience in a secretarial environment.


We offer a range of facilities roles (e.g. portering and housekeeping assistants). All staff are expected to be professional in appearance and well-mannered, with a high standard of work.


Bank workers registered with UHB+ are expected to:

  • demonstrate a level of knowledge and skill relevant their grade
  • adhere to the Trust’s vision and values
  • comply with all Trust policies and procedures
