Placements and Training

Pharmacy student undergraduate education

Undergraduate pharmacy (MPharm) students attend UHB for professional practice experience and teaching ward rounds under the guidance of the Teacher Practitioner pharmacists. The Trust plays a key role in the provision of clinical pharmacy experience through-out all four years of the course in which students attend the hospital for extended sessions in which they rotate through the many clinical specialties and pharmacy services in operation.

The Trusts’ teacher practitioners also co-ordinate and supervise undergraduate final year projects conducted at UHB. Final year projects are compulsory for the accreditation of the master level degree but the projects undertaken within the Trust additionally provide an evidence base for our practice, audit standards of care and are able to translate and collate data from the electronic prescribing system to direct improvement in patient care. The pharmacy department is actively involved in research.

In addition, the hospital is brought to life in the university setting by the Trusts teacher practitioners, through the delivery of workshops, lectures and interactive teaching sessions which reflect the needs of real patients, the use of evidence based medicine and clinical expertise in practice.

Pharmacy (MPharm) student summer placements

Undergraduate Pharmacy students studying for the MPharm degree can apply for our 2nd and 3rd year vacation student programs. These are unpaid 2-3 week summer programs aimed at those with pharmacy experience who would like to experience the variety of ways in which hospital pharmacy contributes to patient care. For more information see the advert and application form below. The deadline for applications is 12:00 on 25 November 2022. Due to the high interest in our Trust, we may close for applications before this deadline once we have received enough applicants. For 2023, placements may be subject to COVID restrictions, therefore may be subject to change in terms of duration and dates. All students will be risk assessed before attending placement and will be advised to follow our COVID standard operating procedure at all times.
