Legislation protecting carers

At University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust's (UHB) we aim to protect your legal rights as a carer in line with current legislation:

Carers rights

  • The right to choose whether to be a carer
  • The right to be supported to identify which of the cared-for person’s needs you might be willing and able to support
  • The right for the carer’s views to be considered by Health and Social Care when organising provision for the cared-for person
  • The right to a Carer’s Assessment – which should help you identify what you want to do with your own life, as well as measuring the impact of the caring role on your wellbeing
  • The right to engage in employment, education, training and leisure
  • The right to request flexible working if employed
  • Additional rights associated within the Equalities Bill

Carers also have the same rights as non-carers, as defined by Civil Rights and Human Rights Legislation. You can find out more about carers rights and the law on the Mobilise website.
