Inpatient falls
Questions
For each financial year from 2010/11 to 2022/23, please can you provide:
- The total number of inpatient falls recorded at hospital
- The total number of patients admitted to hospital (UHB wide) during the same year
- The total number of those falls resulting in injury to the patient
- The total number of those falls resulting in death of the patient
Response
The Trust does hold the information you have requested, however we are only able to provide it by calendar year.
Please also note that University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) completed a merger by acquisition of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) on 1 April 2018.
Due to historical differences in recording systems we are only able to provide data for Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospitals from 2019 onwards.

Note: when analysing the number of patient falls, NHS Trusts must look at these in accordance with number of admissions to ensure that performance is reported proportionate to the level of activity experienced at that Trust. Falls rates are therefore monitored more commonly across NHS Trusts as opposed to number of falls (eg. number of falls x number of bed days / 1000). Hence, number of falls alone are not comparable across NHS Trusts due to the variance in activity experienced by each Trust.
