Dr Rifat RashidHospital Executive Director for Heartlands Hospital
Rifat Rashid began her medical journey in 1997 at the University of St. Andrews where she completed her pre-clinical undergraduate training before graduating from the University of Manchester with her BSc in MBChB Medicine and Surgery in 2000. Having completed her SHO training in Manchester, she embarked upon her specialist registrar training in respiratory medicine in the West Midlands Deanery.
In 2012 she became a Consultant in Cystic Fibrosis and Respiratory Medicine at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Between 2012 and 2018 she developed a strong operational and leadership portfolio taking on several key positions at an early stage in her consultant career. These included Seven Day Clinical Services Lead for HGS in 2015, Clinical Director for Respiratory Medicine in 2016 through to 2018 whilst also continuing as the Lung Cancer Lead HGS during this time and Associate Medical Director for Consultant Development.
Rifat was appointed Deputy Divisional Director for Emergency and Acute Medicine in 2018. In 2020 she was appointed as the Site Responsible Clinician (SRC) for Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH) and led Heartlands Hospital through the COVID pandemic and then the recovery period thereafter. Her SRC role presented her the opportunity to lead, implement and deliver change at pace and across multiple specialities across the BHH site. In her most recent role as Deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) that she was appointed in 2021 she has been heavily involved in trust wide strategy development, quality improvement and external stakeholder engagement.
Rifat was appointed HED in 2023.
