Coronavirus: wearing a mask

If you're attending an appointment or visiting someone at one of our hospitals, pleaseĀ wear a clean surgical face mask to your appointment, unless you are exempt. Masks are available at entrances to our buildings. Please ask a member of staff if you can't find one.

How do masks work?

Masks help reduce droplets containing the virus released when you breathe, speak or cough and may lower the chance of droplets entering through your mouth and nose, if worn correctly.

How to wear a disposable surgical mask correctly

  • Wash your hands
  • Place the clean mask over your mouth and nose
  • Do not remove the mask to talk to people or to cough/sneeze
  • Do not touch the mask until you are ready to remove it

To remove your mask:

  • Wash your hands
  • Remove the mask by the straps
  • Throw the mask in the bin
  • Wash your hands

Other precautions to remember

You should follow Public Health England and World Health Organisation guidelines at all times.

If you wear gloves, don't touch your face or mask, and wash your hands before and after removal and before removing your mask.
