Dr Peter RimmerConsultant Gastroenterologist
Dr Rimmer is a consultant gastroenterologist and honorary senior research fellow at the University of Birmingham. He completed academic training in September 2024 and has an established focus on the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
He completed his studies and early medical training in the South West of England and has worked in the West Midlands since 2017. During his PhD years he developed and continues to deliver an integrated clinical and research pathway for IBD diagnosis. He continues to strive to deliver a service which enables patients to receive early diagnosis and treatment, consequently improving clinical outcomes. His key research interests include the role of the microbiome in gastrointestinal disease, particularly IBD. His current work concentrates on studying the interaction between gut microbiota and the mucosal immune landscape in IBD. He is a member of the clinical team within the Microbiome Treatment Centre at the University of Birmingham and is involved in the use of Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) for various indications. He has presented work at various national and international conferences and continues to publish work in line with the above interests.
In addition to the above, he has broad experience in the management of general gastroenterology and hepatology including liver transplantation. With this background in mind, he currently leads the delivery of IBD care in one of the largest dedicated PSC-IBD clinics in Europe. His endoscopy interests focus on surveillance colonoscopy in IBD, but he remains an active part of the on-call team delivering out of hours care for those with gastrointestinal bleeding.
He is careful to personalise to treatment offered to the needs of each patient and understands that given the growing number of treatment options available in IBD, a one size fits all approach is no longer suitable.
