Shishir is Professor in Liver Tumour immunology and Principal Investigator within the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy at the University of Birmingham. He completed his PhD funded by the CORE charity in 2011, followed by the award of a Wellcome Trust Clinician Scientist Fellowship in 2012 and a Cancer Research UK Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowship in 2020.

His research focus is to find and develop new immunotherapies for patients with liver cancer, and actively engages with patients and the public regarding his research.

Shishir qualified in medicine from University of Leicester in 1999 and has been honorary consultant hepatologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) focusing on the care of patients with primary liver cancer and neuroendocrine tumours since 2012.

He is very keen to support the careers of future researchers and is a member of the clinical academic training operations group and supervises academic fellows and lecturers at the university. He was theme lead in the Birmingham Cancer Research UK centre and currently is a theme lead in the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre.
