Heartlands Research Conference

The conference takes place on 1 and 2 October and aims to showcase and celebrate the breadth of clinical research and quality improvement being undertaken by specialties and professional groups working at Heartlands Hospital, and to support collaboration and the development of programmes that address the needs of the local population we serve.

East Birmingham and Solihull experience some of the highest levels of health and social inequality in the UK, including lower life expectancy, higher levels of chronic disease, and marked social deprivation. The conference aims to strengthen collaboration across specialties and professional groups and support the development of research programmes that address the needs of our local communities.

Submit an abstract

The Heartlands Hospital Research Group invites consultants, specialty and specialist doctors, resident doctors, medical associates, nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists, psychologists, healthcare scientists and physiologists, researchers, and wider clinical teams to submit scientific abstracts for the inaugural Heartlands Research Conference 2026.

The conference aims to showcase and celebrate the breadth of clinical research and quality improvement being undertaken by specialties and professional groups working at Heartlands Hospital, and to support collaboration and the development of programmes that address the needs of the local population we serve.

Abstracts may describe novel research or quality improvement work, including work previously and recently presented at regional, national, or international meetings. Work in progress and recently completed projects are welcome.

Submissions should relate to work undertaken wholly or in part at Heartlands Hospital or involving the Heartlands patient population. Authors should ensure that appropriate ethical, governance, or audit approvals have been obtained where required.

Abstract submission guidance

Abstracts should be submitted as a single-page Microsoft Word document, structured under the following headings:

  • Introduction
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusion

Maximum word count: 250 words

Abstracts should be submitted by emailing: YearofResearch@uhb.nhs.uk

Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters during the conference, with a selection chosen for oral presentation. Prizes will be awarded for the best abstracts and presentations.
