CQC highlights high-quality care in diagnostic imaging at Good Hope Hospital

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has recognised the high standard of care provided by diagnostic imaging services at Good Hope Hospital following an inspection carried out in April 2026. The service was rated Good, with inspectors highlighting a number of strengths across patient care, safety, leadership and teamwork.
The inspection reviewed a range of services including MRI, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, mammography, DEXA scanning, interventional radiology and X-ray services delivered by University Hospitals Birmingham’s diagnostic imaging team.
Inspectors praised the service’s strong culture of learning and patient safety, noting that staff understood and managed risks well and were committed to continuous improvement. Care was delivered in line with current evidence and best practice, while patients were supported to make informed decisions about their treatment.
Patients were particularly positive about their experiences, describing staff as kind, caring and supportive. Inspectors observed colleagues taking time to explain procedures, answer questions and offer reassurance, especially to patients who were feeling anxious. The report also highlighted the team’s commitment to respecting privacy, dignity and individual needs.
The inspection also recognised the strength of leadership within the service, alongside effective governance and risk management arrangements. Staff were described as passionate about improving services and focused on delivering the best possible care for patients. The service was further commended for its support for staff wellbeing and its collaborative culture.
While the report identified some areas for further improvement, including aspects of infection prevention and control and equipment management, it recognised the efforts being made to meet growing demand while keeping patients at the centre of care, and the significant improvements made since the previous inspection in 2024.
