The Trust celebrated with its latest cohort of international trainees as they marked their graduation with a certificate ceremony.

The 40 trainees, consisting of international training fellows and clinical fellows from India, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, have completed a full-time and comprehensive hands-on experience delivered by senior clinicians.

Mr Mike Hallissey, Medical Director (Education), and Dr Phil Bright, Head of School for Medicine (NHS England), led the ceremony which celebrated the fellows’ achievements and provided an opportunity for them to see each other before heading back to their home countries.

The outstanding achievement award went to Dr Umme Habiba, International Training Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who was nominated by her clinical tutor, Dr Afsheen Mahboob, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, who said:

“Dr Habiba has been an exceptional trainee who is highly motivated and very keen to learn new skills but more importantly share knowledge with her peers. Her focus on learning, maintaining a collegiate approach to clinical work, and attention to detail have been the hallmarks of an outstanding period of learning and development. It has been our privilege to work with Umme and help her in her training journey. She is above all a lovely colleague and will undoubtedly forge an exceptional career in the future.”

UHB’s International Training Fellowship Programme was established in 2010 and has long-term relationships with overseas organisations, with a focus on ‘learn and return’. This means that, in addition to providing quality hands-on clinical training across the full range of medical specialties, the programme requires fellows to return to their homes across the globe.

UHB accepts a regular intake of trainees from all over the world. Fellows are encouraged to join the Trust’s international alumni programme as a means of keeping in touch and facilitating contact between previous and current fellows so they can support and inspire each other.
