Senior medical photographer captures consultant urologist featured in national portrait exhibition

Dr. Banan Osman, Consultant Urologist Surgeon at Heartlands and Solihull Hospitals, is featured in a national portrait exhibition currently on display in London.

The exhibition, titled ‘Insight: Portraits of Women in Surgery’, is being held at the Hunterian Museum, part of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Dr. Osman’s portrait was captured by Senior Clinical Photographer Laura Jackman, who shared her excitement about the project: "I felt very honoured to be asked to work on this project; having spent a lot of time in operating theatres photographing surgical procedures, it was fantastic to have the chance to do something different. Seeing the images at the exhibition’s gala opening was a very proud moment.”

This inspiring exhibition shines a spotlight on female surgeons working across the UK, featuring women from various specialities, career stages, and regions. It runs throughout International Women’s Month in March, celebrating the personal journeys, motivations, and invaluable contributions of women in surgery.

Dr. Osman expressed her pride in being chosen to represent female surgeons from the West Midlands, particularly since there are relatively few female urologists in the field. She said: "I want to give hope to future generations who might be considering a career in surgery. I was inspired to train for a medical career by a doctor who treated my father for bladder cancer in London. I received my training in the capital and joined UHB in the autumn of 2022.”

Since then, Dr. Osman has introduced several innovations to improve patient care, including a one-stop consultant-led Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) clinic at Heartlands and Solihull, which aims to provide faster diagnosis and treatment for urology patients. She has also pioneered the use of Transurethral Laser Ablation (TULA) for bladder cancer treatment at these hospitals, making them the first in Birmingham to offer this laser-based procedure for high-risk patients.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Osman is passionate about supporting doctors in training, sharing the knowledge and ‘paying forward’ the skills she has acquired throughout her career.

All the women featured in the exhibition are members of the Women in Surgery Network, which is dedicated to empowering and supporting women who wish to pursue surgical careers.

The ‘Insight: Portraits of Women in Surgery’ exhibition is open Wednesdays to Saturdays, 10:00-17:00, until 18 April 2026. It is included with a free entry ticket to the Hunterian Museum.
