Services at Heartlands Hospital improve – CQC report published

Hospital services are improving at Heartlands Hospital, according to a CQC report that has been published today (Thursday 28 August 2025). 

Services for children and young people have been awarded an overall rating of good following its inspection of three services at Heartlands Hospital earlier this year. 

The maternity service at the hospital has been upgraded just 18 months after it was rated as inadequate and has had its overall rating go up to requires improvement. 

Urgent and emergency care, which includes one of the busiest emergency departments in the region, remains as requires improvement, but its rating for how safe the service is, has improved from inadequate to requires improvement and it has also maintained its good rating for how caring the service is. 

As part of the hospital's senior leaders commitment to making further improvements, ten new consultants are being recruited to obstetricians and gynaecologists’ posts within the maternity service, 30 new nurses have been appointed to work in the emergency and acute medicine departments, and 39 new midwives are to join the maternity service this autumn. 

In addition, the former outpatients' department at Heartlands Hospital will be demolished before the end of the year to make way for a temporary new Urgent Treatment Centre, which will help address some of the CQC's concerns around flow within the Emergency Department. Plans are also progressing for a new emergency and urgent care village, bringing additional capacity to the hospital for those patients that need the most urgent care. 

 Dr Rifat Rashid, Hospital Executive Director - Heartlands Hospital, said: “I am delighted with today’s report that shows that the services that were inspected are either good or getting better. This is thanks to the huge effort our teams have put into providing and improving our services, and I would like to thank each and every one of them. 

"We know that there is much more to do but I am confident we are making positive progress. Our teams are committed to delivering even better services and experiences for our patients, their families and our colleagues and we will work with the different communities we serve to provide the best care possible.”
