At the end of May, our Research and Development department hosted Research Showcase events across all four of our hospital sites, in celebration of International Clinical Trials Day 2025.

This annual event recognises the vital role clinical research plays in improving patient care and marks the anniversary of the first recorded clinical trial, carried out in 1747.

It’s also an opportunity to shine a light on the amazing work of our research teams here at UHB - from those delivering trials to the teams behind the scenes who support research through data, governance and application .

This year, the focus was on sustainability, with teams showcasing how their work is helping to build a more sustainable NHS - one that meets the needs of today’s patients without compromising those of the future.

Examples highlighted by our researchers included the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in emergency departments to improve patient flow, and a study investigating whether reusable surgical drapes and gowns can be as effective as disposable ones in preventing surgical site infections.

Teams also showcased collaborative efforts with sponsors to streamline documentation by reducing paper use, minimise patient travel, and replace single-use devices and plastics, delivering research in a way that is more environmentally friendly, efficient, and less costly.

With engaging, interactive displays and accessible presentations, the showcase brought research to life and made it more visible and accessible for patients, visitors and staff.

Topics covered a wide range of specialties, including respiratory, genetics, rheumatology, dermatology, surgery, trauma, inherited metabolic diseases, haematology, oncology, data, liver, and more.

At Good Hope Hospital, our researchers roved across wards and departments, engaging with staff and patients to share their ongoing research.

Jo Plumb, Director of Research, Development and Innovation at UHB, said: “A huge well done and thank you to all our research teams who took part in this year’s Research Showcase events, and for your hard work and dedication. It was great to speak to so many staff, patients and visitors about the important research work our teams are delivering to improve patient care.”

“We’ve received fantastic feedback, and it’s clear that your contributions have had a real impact across our hospitals and the wider community. Thank you for making this year’s event such a success!”
